NAT GEO MUSIC TO WEBCAST BJÖRK AND SIGUR RÓS CONCERT LIVE FROM ICELAND ON SATURDAY, JUNE 28

NEW YORK (June 27, 2008)—Nat Geo Music, the music division of National Geographic Entertainment, will Webcast an open-air Náttúra concert live from Iceland on Saturday, June 28, 2008. Two of the world’s most important and visionary musical entities, Björk and Sigur Rós, will headline the free concert.

The event will be available exclusively at worldmusic. nationalgeographic. com from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. ET (begins at 8 p.m. BST/London or 7 p.m. GMT/Reykjavik).

To be held in a large park near the centre of Reykjavik, all of the performances will be during daylight, with Iceland’s capital city and dramatic rolling scenery providing a perfect backdrop to what is expected to be one of the biggest concerts the country has seen. The Náttúra concert looks to raise awareness of the impact of the growing aluminum smelting activity on Iceland’s natural landscape.

One of Nat Geo Music’s main goals is to offer artists and experts who care about global culture and the environment an outlet to create awareness for important issues. Spotlighting these amazing artists performing live in a spectacular backdrop allows our worldwide audience to enjoy great music and become aware of Iceland’s environmental concerns and join the conversation,” said David Beal, president of National Geographic Entertainment.

Commenting on the gig, Björk said: “Too often battles being fought for nature turn into something negative and into mudslinging. We will not go that way, we are not saying that this and that is forbidden, we are rather asking ‘what about all these other possibilities?’ The 21st century is not going to be another oil century but rather a century where we need to recycle, think green and design both power plants and our surroundings in harmony with nature.

Sigur Rós, who released its fifth album, “Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust,” this week, believes the issue of aluminum smelting in Iceland is one that can no longer be ignored. “We are not a political band and don’t think musicians should set themselves as spokespeople on anything at all, but sometimes you see things going on in your own back yard and find that just as a human being you cannot stand by and do nothing. The changes that are going on in Iceland need to be the subject of debate and not snuck through the back door because no one lives in the wilderness and there is urban apathy or a general lack of awareness,” said Sigur Rós vocalist Jón Thor Birgisson.

Fram koma: FM Belfast og kimono

Næstkomandi laugardagskvöld, þann 21. júní, ætla hljómsveitirnar FM Belfast og kimono og halda tónleika á Organ, sem einhverskonar upphitun fyrir Náttúru tónleika Bjarkar og Sigur Rósar sem fyrirhugaðir eru þann 28. júní.  Sveitirnar vonast til að vekja athygli á einmitt Náttúru Íslands og verndun hennar, sem og ferðum áttaviltra ísbjarna fyrir norðan.  Því er yfirskrift tónleikanna Náttúra // Ísbjarnablús og tekið skal fram að ekkert samráð var haft við Bubba þegar kom að skírn tónleikanna.  Aftur á móti var haft gott samráð við skipuleggjendur Náttúru tónleikanna í Laugardal. 

Okkur finnst kominn tími til að íslendingar vakni af vondum draumi og fari að láta sig náttúruna varða. Lengi vel höfum við búið við óspillta náttúru sem aðrar þjóðir öfunda okkur af, en svo virðist sem ýmis öfl ætli sér að skaða náttúru okkar og ímynd þjóðarinnar með gengdarlausum virkjunum og stóriðjum í eigin þágu en á okkar reikning. En það er auðvelt að benda fingrinum á aðra en erfiðara að líta í eigin barm.  Það er og margt sem við getum sjálf gert til að bæta þetta ástand og best að byrja á sjálfum sér áður en maður fer að fetta fingur út í það sem aðrir gera. Þetta byrjar inn á heimilinu, þar sem maður getur endurunnið sorp og matarleyfar, dagblöð og dósir. Maður getur lagt bílnum og tekið fram reiðhjólið; hent sígarettustubbunum í næstu ruslafötu en ekki á götuna. Ég trúi því að ef maður setur sjálfan sig í ákveðið hugarástand þá smitar það loks frá sér út í þjóðfélagið þangað til hugulsemi gagnvart náttúrunni verður normið. 

Eins fór það illa fyrir brjósið á okkur að sjá ekki einn, heldur tvo hvítabirni skotna fyrir norðan, enda dýr i útrýmingahættu sem höfðu og engu neitt ill gert. Með tónleikunum viljum við hvetja ráðandi öfl til að vera betur undirbúin þegar sá þriðji gengur á land. Kanadamenn hafa lengi þótt snjallir í að fanga þessi dýr, þegar þau hafa heimsótt okkur mannskepnunar, og koma þeim aftur til heimkynna sinna og felst í þessu áskorun til stjórnvalda að kynna sér þær aðferðir sem kanadabúar beita. 

Tökum höndum saman á laugardaginn og látum í okkur heyra. Við ætlum allaveganna að gera það.

“Með Suð Í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust” was co-produced with the band by renowned producer flood, and was recorded in New York City (at Sear Sound Studios), London (at Assault and Battery Studios and Abbey Road), Reykjavík (at Álafoss, the band’s studio, as well as a church in Reykjavík), and Havana, Cuba.

The album title translates into english as “With A Buzz In Our Ears We Play Endlessly.”

This is the first album in the band’s career to be made outside of Iceland. It is also their first album to feature vocalist Jónsi’s vocals in English on one track. In addition to the English, one of the album’s tracks is sung without lyrics and the rest of the tracks are sung in Icelandic.

We are pleased to announce an outdoor concert featuring Björk, Sigur Rós, Ólöf Arnalds. The concert will take place in Reykjavík, Iceland, on the June 28th. It will be held in Laugardalur, in Þvottalaugabrekkunni. The Concert will be free. Doors will open at 17.00 and end around 22.00

Björk, Sigur Rós og Ólöf Arnalds munu koma fram á útitónleikum í Reykjavík þann 28. júní næstkomandi.  “Náttúra” er yfirskrift tónleikanna en tilgangurinn er að fá fólk til að huga að náttúru og náttúruvernd á Íslandi og á heimsvísu.  Tónleikarnir eru haldnir að frumkvæði Bjarkar.

Ein ástsælasta hljómsveit Íslands fyrr og síðar, Sigur Rós, hefur sent frá sér tilkynningu um heiti og útgáfudag nýjustu breiðskífu sinnar. Breiðskífan mun heita “Með suð í eyrunum við spilum endalaust” og er hún fimmta breiðskífa sveitarinnar. Útgáfudagur plötunnar er 23. júní.

Það er margt sem aðgreinir nýju plötuna frá fyrri verkum sveitarinnar. Fyrir það fyrsta þá er hún ekki tekin upp og unnin af stærstum hluta í hljóðveri sveitarinnar í Álafoss-hvosinni. Upptökur fóru fram í New York, London, Havana á Kúbu og í Sundlauginni í Mosfellsbæ. Upptökum stjórnaði hinn virti upptökustjóri Flood ásamt meðlimum sveitarinnar. Á plötunni er að finna fyrsta lagið sem Jónsi syngur á ensku og er það lokalagskífunnar, “All Alright”. Eitt lag er sungið á “vonlensku” en hin eru öll sungin á íslensku. Platan öll var samin, tekin upp og hljóðblönduð á þessu ári og fyrir vikið má heyra mikla spilagleði og almenna gleði í lagasmíðum sveitarinnar, sem er e.t.v. ný fyrir sumum aðdáendum sveitarinnar.
